Practical Problem

Despite the fact that Design is suited to SMEs as an innovative activity, many companies do not employ design in a deliberate and strategic manner. Design Management enables companies and organizations to successfully deploy design for innovation, market awareness and customer specificity. It is paving its way to commercial necessity. This knowledge brings forth new questions: To what extent do companies successfully integrate Design into operational management? What Design Management skills do companies actually possess?

The internationally recognized Design Management capability assessment tool, the DME staircase model, will fill this gap of knowledge. This research tool was developed by the DME to provide European design support centres and business support centres with valuable input in order to promote Design Management. The DME Staircase Model offers companies insight to where they stand in terms of design, and to the possibilities for further Design Management capability development.
