Modular was established in 1980 by Paul Rommens and Jan Meyfroidt and was originally called ‘Inter-Beams’. In the early years the company was active as an importer of the French Brand Mole-Richardson, but it soon developed to become a trendsetter in the lighting industry, for instance by placing the first low-voltage lighting on the Belgian Market. In 1983 Inter-Beams launched its own low-voltage External lighting with the Una, Jules and Apostrophe series, swiftly followed by the Modupoint jack system. From 1987 export became an important pillar for the company. Top-gear internationalisation was accompanied by a Change of name in 1987: Inter-Beams disappeared, Modular was born.
Modular has since become a household word in architectural circles. The supply of a total concept, ranging from design and development of prototypes via worldwide distribution to the conception of communication campaigns and the execution of lighting studies, came together to form the basis of Modular’s growing success. After the death of Jan Meyfroidt in 2002 Paul Rommens continued the company’s activities alone and prepared Modular for the future. Modular was the first lighting company to obtain the ISO 14001 certificate.
